Testosterone Cypionate is a slow-acting injectable ester of the primary male androgen testosterone. Testosterone is the primary anabolic hormone in men and is favored by many athletes for its ability to promote powerful gains in muscle mass and strength.
Estrogenic Side Effects
Testosterone Cypionate responds to estrogen in the body. The aromatase (estrogen synthase) enzyme is involved in this metabolism of testosterone. Elevated estrogen levels can lead to side effects such as increased water retention, increased body fat, and gynecomastia.
Testosterone Cypionate is considered a moderately estrogenic steroid. An anti-estrogen may be needed to prevent estrogenic side effects.
Estrogenic side effects occur in a dose-dependent manner, with higher doses (above normal therapeutic levels) more likely to require the concomitant use of an anti-estrogen or aromatase inhibitor.
Androgenic Side Effects
Testosterone is the primary male androgen and is responsible for maintaining secondary male sexual characteristics. Elevated levels of testosterone can lead to androgenic side effects such as oily skin, acne, and body/facial hair growth.
Anabolic/androgenic steroids can also worsen male pattern baldness.
Women are warned of the potential virilizing effects of anabolic/androgenic steroids, especially when used with potent androgens such as testosterone. These may include deepening of the voice, menstrual irregularities, changes in skin texture, facial hair growth, and clitoral enlargement.
Hepatotoxic side effects
Testosterone cypionate does not have a hepatotoxic effect, so liver toxicity is unlikely.
Cardiovascular side effects
Anabolic/androgenic steroids can have deleterious effects on serum cholesterol. This includes a tendency to lower HDL (good) cholesterol levels and raise LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. This may shift the balance between HDL and LDL toward a higher risk of atherosclerosis.
The relative effects of anabolic/androgenic steroids on serum lipids depend on the dose, route of administration (oral vs. injectable), type of steroid (aromatizable or nonaromatizable), and the level of resistance to hepatic metabolism. Anabolic/androgenic steroids may also adversely affect blood pressure and triglycerides, decrease endothelial relaxation, and support left ventricular hypertrophy, all of which may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and myocardial infarction.
Testosterone Cypionate tends to have a more dramatic effect on cardiovascular risk factors than synthetic steroids. This is due in part to its openness to metabolism by the liver, which results in less impact on hepatic management of cholesterol. The aromatization of testosterone to estradiol also helps to reduce the adverse effects of androgens on serum lipids.
Because of the positive effects of estrogens on serum lipids, aromatase inhibitors are preferred by those concerned about cardiovascular health, as they provide a partial estrogenic action in the liver.
To reduce cardiovascular strain, it is recommended to maintain an active cardiovascular exercise program and to minimize intake of saturated fats, cholesterol, and simple carbohydrates at all times during active steroid administration. Supplementation with fish oil and a natural cholesterol/antioxidant formula is also recommended.
Testosterone Suppression
All anabolic/androgenic steroids are expected to suppress endogenous testosterone production. Testosterone is the primary male androgen and has a strong response to endogenous testosterone production.
Testosterone-based drugs similarly have a strong effect on the hypothalamic regulation of natural steroid hormones. Without the intervention of a testosterone stimulant, testosterone levels should return to normal within 1-4 months of drug withdrawal.
Note that prolonged hypogonadotropic hypogonadism may be secondary to steroid abuse and will require medical intervention.
Dosage for Men
Recommended doses of Testosterone Cypionate are 50-400mg every 2-4 weeks to treat male menopause.
Usual dosages for athletes range from 400-800mg per week, taken in cycles of 6-12 weeks. This level is sufficient for most users to notice exceptional increases in muscle size and strength.
Testosterone Cypionate is a highly effective anabolic drug, often used alone with great benefit. However, it is ultimately very versatile and can be combined with many other anabolic/androgenic steroids to tailor the desired effect.
Dosage for Women
Women should not take it.
*Testosterone Cypionate is not recommended for women for performance enhancement purposes due to its strong androgenic nature and tendency to cause masculinizing side effects.
